Recently, I spoke with a recruiter who brutally honestly explained why so many job seekers fail. Their insights were refreshing, humbling, and exactly what I needed to hear.

Your Resume Isn’t Talking to the Job
A common mistake?

Sending out the same generic resume for every application.

“If you don’t tailor your resume to the role, you’re not telling employers why you fit,” they said. It’s not just about listing your achievements, it’s about aligning them with the company’s needs.

You Don’t Understand the Company
“Employers can tell when you didn’t bother to research,” the recruiter explained.

And it’s more than just memorizing the company’s ‘About Us’ page. You need to connect your skills to their challenges.

If they see you as someone who already understands their goals, you’re a step ahead.

You’re Not Selling Yourself Right
Overconfidence turns people off, but underselling yourself is equally damaging.

The recruiter described it as finding the sweet spot: “Be proud of your experience, but let your excitement to grow shine through. No one’s looking for a know-it-all or a self-doubter.”
